Meeting Purpose
To kick off planning for the 2026 Skin-to-Skinathon and introduce a new meeting format.
Key Takeaways
- Event Expansion: The 2nd annual Skin-to-Skinathon will run for the entire month of August, replacing last year’s single-week format to provide more flexibility for the 35+ participating hospitals.
- Communication Overhaul: A new Google Groups system has access issues. The leadership team will troubleshoot and use direct email blasts for minutes and invites in the interim.
- New Meeting Format: Monthly meetings now include 30–45 minute breakout sessions for focused work on Staff Education, Parent Education, Research & QI, and Communication & Marketing.
- Critical QI Goal: A major group goal is to advocate for electronic skin-to-skin documentation at all sites. This is a critical step for enabling research into the “dose effect” of skin-to-skin care, as only 33% of sites currently have this capability.
Topics

- Participants: 35+ hospitals in CICUs and step-down units.
- Timeline:
- Website: The central hub for resources. Site leaders should review the Canva templates early to allow time for customization.
Communication & Logistics
- Google Groups: The new system has access issues (e.g., “no permission” errors), preventing delivery of minutes and forms.
- Resource Sharing: To help new sites, the team is collecting examples of 2025 activities and updated holding and/or SSC protocols.
- Swag: A new, streamlined ordering process via Bonfire will replace last year’s centralized method.
Breakout Session: Communication & Marketing
- CNOC Website Link: Explore linking Skin-to-Skinathon content to the new CNOC patient-facing website.
- SV1/NPCQIC Submission: Submit a proposal for the upcoming spring learning sessions to raise the event’s profile within the Cardiac Networks United community.
- Social Media:
Breakout Session: Parent Education
- Identified the need for materials that outline simple, meaningful tasks parents can do at the bedside and how they promote bonding, neurodevelopment, and healing
- Skin-to-skin, Reading, Singing/talking, Positive touch, Play and Interaction
- Educational Material on Parent self-care
- Taking breaks, managing stress/guilt, nutrition/rest
- Noted that families often receive large amounts of written handouts, which can be overwhelming and the challenges with language barriers and health literacy. Explore other educational formats
- Photo-based guides, short educational videos, social stories, visual step-by-step materials
- Look into bedside demonstrations, reels, under a minute type videos
- Use the website other social platforms so they are available both inpatient and once discharged
- Discussed providing age-appropriate bonding and developmental activities for families while their child is hospitalized (infant, toddler, child, adolescent)?
- Wait to few educational material sent in from other centers to move forward with planning
Breakout Session: Staff Education
Breakout Session: Research/QI
- Amy Jo Lisanti provided a great summary of the survey from last year and the status of that manuscript. Several people who participated in the skin-to-skin-a-thon are working on this project.
- This year, our major goal is improving documentation of skin-to-skin in the chart so that we can have better data for future studies. (Could be great QI at individual hospitals)
- Our long term goal right now is supporting a point prevalence study (possibly in 2027), but that will take IRD, DUA, etc.
- We are going to focus our energy on getting the research from the last skin to skin a thon out and getting documentation in the chart this year.
